14A

1) To keep up with the requirements for this course I have had to be persistent. Although I work and run an organization on campus, I've realized that life is all about time management and what you make a priority. With the simple use of my smartphone calendar, I am able to keep up with all the requirements. I make sure to schedule when assignments are due and I separately schedule out time each day to complete them early!
2) One moment that I have felt like giving up is now.  I am the co-founder and president of the nation's second Black Public Relations Student Society.  I have such a huge responsibility of carrying this organization similar to overseeing a business. I have to designate an executive board, give duties to my board, craft meeting plans for about 30 members and control a budget of over $3,000. Being a leader is not easy because you must consider the perspectives of others, understand that people won't always think similar to you and won't always be available, remain kind, and also remain stern with planned expectations. What is pulling me through is the people I surround myself with. I have about three advisors who are my former professors here at UF. Whenever I need help or feel frustrated, I am able to count on them to help me express my thoughts and remain calm. So far I have developed a tenacious attitude by not giving up and being as organized as possible.

3) Three tips.
- Don't always depend on your own understanding.
After my three years in college, I had to come to the realization that I am still growing as a student and I need to here wise words and advice from a person who can relate to me. As mentioned, I have mentors who I can count on to speak to and get advice from. These mentors help me shape a different perspective, think innovatively and remain calm in times of self-doubt or anger. It's important to surround yourself with people who want to see you be great, are successful and help you think outside of the box when it comes to dealing with everyday life.
- Never give up and stay organized
As mentioned, I stay organized by using a calendar and scheduling everything. Even when I want to go out to dinner with friends, or read a book, or do an assignment, I make sure it's written down so 1. I don't forget it and 2. I build every skill I will need throughout my life. Every opportunity in life is a learning opportunity! Never give up and remain positive through the storm of classwork, work-life balance and keeping up with your health. It's important to understand that we only have ONE life. Don't mess it up and work on yourself each day to be the person you see yourself as.
- Schedule off-time for yourself
Having down time is healthy. Being consumed by homework, studying and loud environments can often be frustrating and take a toll on your mental stability. It's important to sometimes take a break, breath, relax and practice your religion if you have one!

  1. Hi,
I agree that persistence is one of the most important factors one should have. I also liked that you added the "off-time for yourself", this is a mistake most people tend to do in their lives, they focus too much on work and little on the development of an interpersonal life. Also support the organized part, I've had trouble with my time management, but as the semester continues, I've been able to work correctly on all of them organizing my time.

  2. Hey Gernise,
I see you also pointed out that time management is key. I also talked a lot about time management and in your case having to run your own organization, time management is everything to you. I think it is great that you have those advisors there not just for strategic and business advice but also for motivation and helping you stay focused and work hard because when you start to doubt yourself and get frustrated, then your whole opportunity is starting to close. I also agree when you said to schedule time off for yourself. If you do nothing but work and work and work and exhaust yourself then you may lose sight of what you did it all for in the first place and you can really make yourself more susceptible to over-schedule yourself and set yourself up for failure.

  3. Hi Gernise

I was impressed with your time management skills. Going to work, running an organization and having a course load is not easy at all. It requires a lot of discipline and also a lot of effort. Regarding your tips, I found your first tip very helpful. Sometimes you are not going to have the answers and have to outsource and find them. Accomplishing things alone and be very hard. Your second tip is very helpful. College is about being organized. If someone manages to stay organized success is almost guaranteed. Thank you for sharing with the class.

  4. Hey Gernise,

I am sorry you are stressed out right now. You can do it!!! I learned too I had to make time management a priority in this class because deadlines come out of nowhere. My favorite thing about your post is scheduling time for yourself. It is so easy to get caught up in studying and working, but we need that mental downtime in order to stay mentally healthy. Great tips!
